When the Nest Empties: Surviving and Thriving Post-College Drop-off

Hello Beautiful People!! Let's Go!!!!

In a matter of months, I will be an empty nester!!! (yes, I say this with enthusiasm) my daughter is just as happy and is looking forward to this new and exciting chapter in her life (I am). However, let's direct this blog to the newly minted empty nesters.

The Nest is Empty, but Your Heart is Full

Congratulations! You've successfully navigated the treacherous waters of raising a child to adulthood. Now, as your young scholar begins to conquer the world of higher education, you find yourself staring at an empty nest. But before you spiral into a pit of despair, remember this: you can survive and even thrive in this new chapter of life.

The Reality Check: The Silence is Deafening

So, the day has come. You've dropped your child off at college, probably with pride and a hefty dose of tears. You return home to a shockingly quiet house. The TV isn't blaring video games, no loud music resonating through the walls, and the refrigerator is unusually full.

Suddenly, you realize the silence is both golden and terrifying.

Rediscovering Yourself: The New You 2.0

With your child off designing their future, it's time to focus on your own. Here are a few witty tips to help you navigate this transition:

Embrace the Mess: Remember when you complained about the mess? Now, you'll find yourself missing those random socks and half-eaten sandwiches. Embrace the chaos that once was—it made your house feel alive!

Rekindle Old Passions: Dust off those hobbies you shelved while raising your kid. Whether painting, knitting, or dancing salsa in the kitchen, now's your time to shine.

Date Your Spouse or Partner: Chances are, you and your partner have been more roommates than lovers. Reignite that spark with spontaneous date nights. Think wine tastings, movie marathons, or even a surprise trip.

Adopt a Pet: Consider a furry friend if the silence is unbearable. Pets can fill the void with their antics and unconditional love.

The Digital Lifeline: Staying Connected

Thanks to modern technology, staying connected with your college-bound offspring has never been easier. Remember, there's a fine line between staying in touch and being a digital stalker.

Video Calls: Schedule regular video calls. This way, you can see their face, and they can show you their dorm décor (or lack thereof).

Social Media: Follow them, but resist commenting on every post. "Mom, don't like my selfies!"

Care Packages: Send care packages filled with their favorite snacks, a cozy blanket, and a handwritten note. It's a tangible way to show you care.

The Silver Lining: Room for Growth

The empty nest isn't just an end—it's a beginning. It's a time for both you and your child to grow independently. Embrace the change with a sense of humor and a positive outlook.

You'll find that the nest may be empty, but your life is far from it. With a newfound sense of freedom and a little wit, this phase can be one of the most fulfilling yet.

Spread Your Wings

So, remember to laugh a little the next time you walk past your child's empty room and feel sad. You've done an amazing job raising a future world-changer. Now, it's your turn to soar.

Cheers to the empty nesters! May your days be filled with joy, laughter, and perhaps mischief.

Love this article, it's a bittersweet feeling when the time comes but thankfully I feel tech has bridged the communication gap. We can video call and give them comforts from home. I am excited and nervous for the next year will go so fast and then our guy will be college-bound!
